CSS Named Colors
145 color keywords built into every browser — no hex codes required.
What are CSS named colors?
CSS named colors are a set of keywords defined in the CSS Color specification. Instead of writing #ff7f50, you can write coral directly in your stylesheet and every browser will understand it.
The list has grown across CSS versions. The original 16 colors came from the HTML 3.2 specification in 1996. CSS2 added orange, and CSS3 expanded the set to 147 colors — a list that maps closely to the X11 color names used in early Unix graphical environments. One notable addition is rebeccapurple, added in 2014 in memory of Rebecca Meyer, daughter of CSS pioneer Eric Meyer.
How to use them
Named colors work anywhere a CSS color value is accepted:
background: rebeccapurple;
border-color: dodgerblue;
box-shadow: 0 4px 12px rgba(255, 127, 80, 0.4);
They have full browser support across all modern browsers and are perfectly valid in production code. Click any color below for the full HEX, RGB, HSL, and OKLCH values.
